Electric Bicycle Laws

If you are wondering about electric bicycle laws, here's the gist of it.

In 2001 the U.S. Congress passed Public Law 107-319 which makes electric bicycles under 750 watts and 20 mph NOT a motor vehicle.

That means you shouldn't be going over 20 mph on one because that is the written law. Every state might be different in its own way.

In many places electric bicycle are illegal but that is not to say that the rules are heavily enforced. After all, we all jay walk once in a while.Electric Bicycle Laws

So yes it's a little unsure but I think that police aren't really too worried about it unless you are being silly, attracting attention in some way, or just being stupid!

On a side note, I have been seeing a lot of people with gas powered bicycles lately.

You know (with those weed wacker engines) and those are loud/fast and attract attention.

But I still continue seeing the same people riding them...

So be safe and wear a helmet and I think you will be fine!

E-bikes do not need any form of license plate (as stated in law 107-319).
